The garden is located in Szentendre\u2019s former enclosed garden district, where narrow streets and small lots create a particularly distinctive urban fabric. Of the 500 m\u00b2 lot, only 300 m\u00b2 remained as green space; therefore, every square meter in the design is the result of deliberate spatial planning and functional decisions. The goal was not a complete redesign, but a sensitive garden renovation: by preserving the existing structures, fine-tuning the spatial layout, and rethinking the use of materials, a contemporary, human-scale, and emotionally resonant garden was created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The design was guided by a consistent commitment to recycling. The existing stairs, retaining walls, and paving foundations were left in place and given a new, rustic stone-effect concrete finish, which visually connects the garden with the architectural elements of the house. Taking soil conditions into account, local soil improvement was carried out: the clay-rich structure was loosened with a mixture of sand and compost, and the sifted stones were repurposed in water drainage and retention systems. Thus, a cost-effective and sustainable renovation was achieved with minimal energy and material expenditure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The garden\u2019s species-rich plant composition, which changes throughout the year, serves both aesthetic and ecological purposes. Pollinator-friendly perennials, an insect hotel, a birdbath, and bird-friendly shrubs support urban wildlife, while the space is also well-suited for children, dogs, and cats. The selection of plants adapted to the environment, the retention of rainwater on-site, and the use of drought-tolerant species ensure long-term sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to the thoughtful spatial planning, the small garden is multifaceted: it features several seating areas, a kitchen garden, a play area, and a secluded nook\u2014all without feeling cramped. The new retaining wall in the front yard screens cars parked there from view, ensuring the privacy of the inner garden remains undisturbed. Evening lighting adds a new dimension to the space: the garden offers an enjoyable experience both during the day and after dark, proving that with thoughtful design, even a small footprint can become a fully-fledged, lovable living space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
