- On 15 October, we held a celebratory conference entitled ‘Landscapes, People, Connections’ at MATE’s Buda Campus to mark Professor Imre Jámbor’s 80th birthday.

At the event, former and current colleagues, students, peers and friends reflected on Imre Jámbor’s rich professional and academic legacy, as well as its lasting influence. The presentations and personal tributes not only highlighted the key stages of a remarkable career, but also the professional ideas and personal connections that bind together landscape architects across several generations.

The volume entitled The Age of Landscape Architecture – Studies and Essays in Honour of Imre Jámbor on his 80th Birthday, which we edited jointly with Sára Jánosiné Perneczky, was produced to mark this festive occasion. The creation of this book was the result of a long and intensive process, so it is a source of particular joy and pride for me that we were able to hold a copy in our hands at the conference.

The starting point for the editorial concept of this volume was the enduring legacy and contemporary influence of Imre Jámbor’s key areas of research. The essays demonstrate how the topics he researched and taught continue to live on in contemporary landscape architecture thought, professional practice and the work of newer generations.
This publication pays tribute to Imre Jámbor’s professional and academic work, whilst providing a comprehensive overview of the historical significance, current challenges and future prospects of landscape architecture. The essays cover topics ranging from the traditions of garden design to the shaping of the contemporary urban environment.

The exhibition showcases the legacy of Renaissance gardens, the two-hundred-year history of Városliget, and the development of green space planning and urban green infrastructure. Particular attention is paid to nature-oriented garden design, the role of the urban wilderness, and an examination of the challenges, trends and prospects of 21st-century urban public spaces.
The volume also looks back on Imre Jámbor’s work as a lecturer and head of department, emphasising the importance of education and the creation of professional value. The studies, which combine Hungarian and international perspectives, present landscape architecture within the context of cultural heritage conservation, an ecological approach and sustainable urban development.
This volume, published as part of the 4D Books series, is now freely available in digital format:

I warmly recommend this to anyone interested in the past, present and future of landscape architecture.
